Metiabruz

Metiabruz is a fascinating place to learn about the history and culture of Kolkata. It is a locality that was once the home of the last Nawab of Awadh, Wajid Ali Shah, who was exiled there by the British in 1856. He built a mini-Lucknow in Metiabruz, with his palace, gardens, mosque, imambara, and patronage of arts and crafts. He also introduced the Awadhi cuisine, which is famous for its biryani, kebabs, and sweets. Metiabruz has a unique sub-culture that is a blend of Bengali and Awadhi traditions. It is a place where you can see the legacy of Wajid Ali Shah, who is buried in the Shahi Imambara, where he used to celebrate Muharram and other festivals. You can also visit the Sibtainabad Mosque, where he prayed, and the local markets, where you can find handicrafts, perfumes, and fabrics. Metiabruz is a place that tells the story of Kolkata’s diversity and richness.

Mohammed Imtiaz

Mohammad Imtiaz is a third-generation doctor who operates a small hospital in India. He is quite good at treating his patients—which happen to be fountain pens. For decades, Imtiaz has been repairing and selling fountain pens at his Pen Hospital in Kolkata. Situated in a narrow alleyway of Chowringhee Road in Esplanade, this one-of-a-kind hospital has been treating broken nibs and pen pistons since before India gained its independence in 1947. Fountain pen connoisseurs and vintage pen collectors in Kolkata and the surrounding area know where to go if their pen is broken and bleeding blue.

Probir Chatterjee

Anahayan, a four-decade-old book store located in the basement of Kolkata's gariahat market, is the best place to find titles of books across varied genres, the majority of which are on art that are restored and archived. While many of these books are sold at a high price to book connoisseurs, some are priceless and hence the book owner, Probir Chatterjee, chooses to keep them instead.
